INTERIM ASSESSMENT FOR THE CLASS CHRONICLES

My First Dive into New Media: Lessons That Changed How I See the Digital World

As a media student, this semester's Introduction to New Media class has been an absolute game-changer for me. Before this course, I was just scrolling through Instagram and TikTok like everyone else, mindlessly consuming content without really thinking about why things work the way they do online. But now? I feel like I've unlocked a whole new level of understanding about the digital world. In this post, I want to share my personal experience and reflect on three key things I've learnt that have genuinely impacted me.

1. How to Use Various New Media Platforms According to Their Preferences

One of the biggest eye-openers was learning that not all social media platforms are the same, you can't just post the same content everywhere and expect it to land. Each platform has its own "vibe" and audience preferences.

For instance, TikTok thrives on short, snappy, entertaining videos with trends and music. Instagram is more visual and lifestyle-oriented, perfect for polished photos, stories, and reels. Twitter or X is fast-paced for real time conversations and text heavy takes, while YouTube rewards longer, in-depth content.

This hit me hard because I used to cross-post everything identically, and my engagement was underwhelming. Now, I tailor my content, fun dances on TikTok, and aesthetic feeds on Instagram. It has made posting way more strategic and fun.

2. The Characteristics of New Media and Some of Its Uses

We dove deep into what makes "new media" different from traditional stuff like newspapers or TV. New media is interactive, user-generated, mixing text, video, audio, and super accessible thanks to the internet.

Key characteristics? It's participatory meaning anyone can create and share, hyperlinked, multimedia-rich, and spreads virally through networks. Uses include people reporting news in real-time during events to entertain, educate, and activism such as hashtag movements.

This blew my mind. I realized new media isn't just "social apps"; it's a shift in power from big media houses to everyday people like us. It explains why memes can influence culture more than a TV ad sometimes.

3. How to Start a Social Media Campaign

Finally, learning the step by step process of launching a social media campaign felt like getting a superpower. It's not just posting randomly, there's a method.

Start with clear goals such as awareness or engagement, know your audience, choose the right platforms, create compelling content with hashtags, schedule posts, engage with commenters, and analyse likes, shares, and reach to adjust things.

As I currently further my mini campaign project, I have noticed how thrilling a well-planned campaign can build reach. Now I feel equipped to run something real, maybe for a cause I care about.

How These Lessons Have Changed My Perception and Use of New Media

As a media student, these insights have completely transformed how I view and interact with new media. Before, I saw platforms as just fun distractions or places to kill time. Now, I perceive them as powerful tools shaped by specific algorithms, audience behaviours, and tools that democratize information but also require responsibility.

My daily use has become more intentional: I create content thoughtfully, engage meaningfully, and think critically about what's being amplified online. It has made me a smarter consumer and creator, aware of how campaigns can drive change or spread misinformation. I feel empowered and excited about a career in media. New media isn't just the future, it is the present, and I am ready to jump in!
